NATFED CALLS ON FILIPINOS TO SUPPORT LOCAL PORK AMID RISING PRESSURE FROM IMPORTED PORK

Filipino hog farmers are struggling to remain profitable as imported pork intensifies competition in the local market. Supporting local pork means protecting Filipino livelihoods and strengthening the country’s food security.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The National Federation of Hog Farmers, Inc. (NatFed) is calling on Filipino consumers, food businesses, retailers, restaurants, and institutional buyers to support locally produced pork as domestic hog farmers face mounting challenges in sustaining their operations amid the continued presence of imported pork in the Philippine market.
For Filipino hog farmers, the challenges go beyond raising livestock. They must contend with production expenses, animal disease risks, and market prices that may not adequately cover their costs. With imported pork adding to the competition in the domestic market, local producers face greater pressure to sell their products at competitive prices while managing their operating expenses.

Today, many local hog farmers are struggling to make a profit, with some facing the difficult reality of selling their hogs at prices that may not sufficiently cover production costs. The continued influx of imported pork adds to the competitive pressure, making it increasingly challenging for local producers to sustain their businesses and secure a fair return on their investments.

When local farmers struggle to remain profitable, the consequences extend beyond individual farms. Farm workers, feed suppliers, transporters, traders, and other stakeholders throughout the local pork supply chain may also be affected. In the long run, continued financial pressure on domestic producers could discourage investment in local hog production and undermine the country’s capacity to maintain a strong and reliable domestic pork supply.

NatFed emphasizes that supporting local pork is an investment in Filipino farmers, local livelihoods, and the future of Philippine agriculture.

Supporting local hog farmers is about more than choosing where our pork comes from. It is about helping Filipino families sustain their livelihoods, keeping local agricultural enterprises viable, and ensuring that our farmers have a fair opportunity to compete in their own market.

The federation encourages consumers to consider locally produced pork when shopping for their families and urges restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, food service providers, and institutional buyers to explore opportunities to source pork from reputable Filipino producers.

While imported pork contributes to the country’s available supply, NatFed stresses the importance of maintaining a viable domestic hog industry. A healthy balance between market supply and the sustainability of local producers is essential to ensuring that Filipino farmers can continue contributing to the nation’s food requirements.

Consumers can play a meaningful role by choosing locally produced pork from reputable suppliers whenever possible. Food businesses, meanwhile, can help strengthen the local industry by establishing reliable sourcing relationships with domestic farmers and incorporating locally raised pork into their purchasing programs.

NatFed also underscores the importance of responsible sourcing, proper food handling, and compliance with applicable food safety standards to protect consumers and maintain confidence in the local pork supply chain.

The federation believes that stronger collaboration among farmers, government agencies, industry partners, retailers, restaurants, and consumers is necessary to address the challenges confronting the local hog industry. Policies and market practices that enable Filipino farmers to compete fairly and recover their production costs are important to the long-term sustainability of domestic pork production.

Supporting local pork is supporting the people behind every Filipino table. By giving locally produced pork greater consideration in purchasing decisions, Filipinos can help sustain farming communities, protect local livelihoods, and contribute to a stronger agricultural sector.

NatFed calls on the public and the food industry to stand with Filipino hog farmers and recognize their essential role in feeding the nation.
